Symmetry and the Beautiful Universe bakışım ile fizik yasaları arasındaki matematiksel özdeşliğin ışığında doğa yasalarını anlatmaktadır. Bakışım(simetri) özünde geometri kökenli bir kavram olup iki veya daha çok şey arasındaki konum, biçim, yönelim ve ölçünün uygunluğunu anlatan örüntüsel karakterdeki bir matematik terimidir.

Bu bakımdan doğanın örüntülerinin ilkeler çerçevesindeki teorik (matematiksel) anlatımı olan fizik yasaların birer bakışım şeklinde ifade edilebilir olduğu ilk kez büyük Bayan Matematikçi Noether tarafından gündeme getirerek açıklanmıştır. A. Einstein’nin de rölativite yasalarını formüle ederken kullandığı bu açıklama o günden bu yana fizik yasalarının teorik cenapta matematiksel bakışımlarolarak ifade edilmesine neden olmuştur.
